Programs

Swim school, competition and masters

Learn to swim in the school, continue in Desafío, race with CNA, or swim with the adult masters group.

At CNA there is not a single path. There are children who arrive at four years old and do not know how to put their face in the water, teenagers who come from another club looking to train more seriously, and adults who have not worn a swimsuit since high school. There is a group for all of them.

What is common to every program is the way of working: technique first, measured progression, and a coach who knows what each swimmer is doing and why.

If you do not know which group fits your case, write us. We do an in-water assessment and tell you honestly where to start.

The timetable and fee for each group: the office, Monday to Friday 16:30–18:30 (Vélez-Málaga 952 558 731, Torre del Mar 699 192 143). The club groups (Desafío, Alevín, and Infantil · Júnior · Absoluto) are published on Coaching staff.

Swim school for children

Learn to swim well, for life

In charge: Carlos Díaz

Source: club (2026-27 season meeting, 7 Oct 2026)

Swim School is the club’s front door and, for many families, the reason they come to us. Here you learn the essentials: lose the fear, float, breathe with rhythm, move with safety, and, little by little, master the four strokes.

We work in small groups and by level, not by age alone. A seven-year-old who already swims independently does not have to be in the same group as another seven-year-old who has just started. That lets each one progress at their own pace so no one gets stuck or struggles.

We put a lot of weight on water safety, which in a region like ours is a real priority. Before we teach going fast we teach not drowning: float on the back, roll over, recover breathing, reach the wall, and get out without help. These are skills a child from the Axarquía will use at the beach and in the pool for life.

And yes, we also care that they have a good time. A child who enjoys the water comes back the next year; one who suffers it does not. Well-directed play is a technical tool, not a prize.

Where

Swim School does not have a separate published pool. The club trains in Torre del Mar, and Desafío trains in Vélez-Málaga. The office confirms the timetable for each level.

Desafío, between learning and racing

The bridge between learning and competing

  • Desafío (2018)

Coaches: Andrea V. + Rafa Díaz

Source: club (2026-27 season meeting, 7 Oct 2026)

Desafío is the group where a swimmer stops “knowing how to swim” and starts “swimming well.” Training volume increases, technique is polished in detail, and the elements of racing are introduced: starts from the block, freestyle and backstroke turns, legal touches, relays, and pace control.

Here you also learn to compete, which is a skill in itself. First meets are approached without time pressure: what matters is understanding the rhythm of a meet day, warming up well, respecting heat order, not getting disqualified over a rules detail, and enjoying swimming in front of an audience.

It is a group that demands consistency. We do not ask for results; we ask for attendance and attitude. A swimmer who comes three weeks and misses two cannot progress at the group’s pace, and that is something we discuss clearly with families from the start.

This group trains in Vélez-Málaga. The offices are open Monday to Friday, 16:30–18:30, in Vélez-Málaga and in Torre del Mar.

The competition team is the sporting heart of the club. Here you train with a season plan, with goals by period, and with a federated calendar ahead. Swimmers hold a license and compete in the official events that correspond to their category.

Work is organized in cycles: general conditioning, stroke- and distance-specific work, and tapering before important meets. Load is managed, times are recorded, and each swimmer’s progression is discussed with them. It is not a group where you just swim: every set has a reason.

Competing costs effort and it costs money. There is travel, early mornings, weekends in pools in other provinces, and days when the time does not come. That is why we value so highly the families who get involved: without them this group would not exist.

We ask three things of swimmers: show up, listen, and race with your head. The rest—the time and the placements—comes after. And when it comes, it is celebrated as a team.

Adults, with or without prior experience

Masters swimming for adults

It is never too late to come back to the water

The Masters group is for adults who want to swim seriously without swimming being their life. Some come to stay healthy and shake off office back pain, some were swimmers when they were young and miss the water, and some discover at forty that they like to race.

You train with sets, with technique, and with judgment: it is not “free swim” in a lane. The coach adapts the work to each person’s level and goal, and everyone’s starting point is respected. People who do 1,500 meters a session and people who do 3,000 coexist perfectly here.

For anyone who feels like it, there is the option to compete in the masters category: the same rules and the same nerves at the start.

Many of our masters swimmers are parents of club swimmers. They start by dropping the kids off and end up swimming in the next lane.

Where

Masters is for adults. The site does not publish a separate pool for this group: the office confirms the timetable.

How to enroll, step by step

No unnecessary paperwork. In four steps you are in the water.

1. Write or call us

Tell us the swimmer’s age, whether they can swim, and what they are looking for. With that we can already point you toward a specific group.

2. In-water tryout

For Desafío, Competition, and Masters we do a simple technical tryout. In Swim School, we place by level in the first sessions.

3. Form and enrollment

The club form is completed with the swimmer’s details, emergency contacts, authorizations, and the documentation that applies.

4. First practice

We tell you the schedule, lane, required equipment, and which coach you will train with. From there, swim.

Places per group are limited by lane availability at the facility. If the group you need is full, we put you on the waiting list and notify you as soon as there is an opening.

Frequently asked questions about the programs

Does my child need to know how to swim to join Swim School?

No. Swim School exists precisely for that. We have beginner groups that work from getting comfortable with the water, floating, and breathing. We only need to know their age and prior experience to place them at the right level.

When can you start? Do you have to wait until September?

The season is organized by school year, but we accept joiners throughout the year whenever there is a place in the corresponding group. Write us and we will tell you the actual availability at that moment.

What is the difference between Desafío and Competition?

In Desafío you learn to compete: fine technique, starts, turns, rules, and first meet days without pressure. In Competition you race for real, with a federation license, season planning, and an official calendar. Moving from one group to the other is proposed by the coaching staff when the swimmer is ready.

Is competing mandatory?

In Swim School, no. In Desafío you take part in introductory meet days as part of the training. In the Competition group you do take on the commitment to compete, because that is the group’s reason for being.

What equipment does a swimmer need?

To start, a training swimsuit, cap, goggles, and flip-flops. In the development and competition groups, specific equipment is added (paddles, kickboard, pull buoy, fins), which is indicated at the start of the season. Official club kit is purchased at the Austral shop.

Can I watch a practice before I decide?

Yes. Come to the facility, talk with the coach, and watch a session from the stands. We prefer that families see how we work before they enroll.

Is there a baby swimming class?

No baby class is published. Swim School is for children, grouped by level and age, including those who arrive unable to swim. The club text talks about children who arrive at four. The office confirms the age for each place, Monday to Friday, 16:30–18:30, on 952 558 731 (Vélez-Málaga) or 699 192 143 (Torre del Mar).

Where does each program train?

The club trains at the Piscina Municipal José Eduardo Hernández in Torre del Mar. The Desafío group trains in Vélez-Málaga. Alevín and Infantil · Júnior · Absoluto are at that pool. Swim School and masters do not have a separate published pool: the office confirms the timetable.

Is masters for adults?

Yes. It is for adults, with or without previous experience, who can manage in the water on their own. Racing in the masters category is optional. You have to be of legal age.
